What is particularly important to me about art:
Visual arts, as well as other art forms, are currents that humanity doesn’t need for survival, but without which humanity—at least a minority of it—would not want to live, and something essential would be missing. Alongside daily human life, work, politics, and economics, which I define as closed systems, art forms are for me open and free systems that appeal to the emotional realm. One could also say that art can express something inexpressible and indescribable that would otherwise not be perceptible.
What do impulses evoke, and how do colors affect us? Color can be perceived as a sign, or the sign as color – both elicit a reaction from those viewing a painting. But there is also an effect on my part: sensory perceptions and discoveries, largely held unconsciously within, resurface through painting, drawing, and sculpture.
I am interested in the material and also the technique, but there is no single style to categorize and recognize my works. Canvas, paper, cardboard, plastic, wood, acrylic, watercolors, charcoal, sanguine, graphite are processed into works.
Education
Gernot Schmerlaib, under the pseudonym BIX, rediscovered visual arts after a long hiatus, following his focus on economic and professional pursuits. His education was autodidactic, and thus uninfluenced and free. Since 2004, BIX’s works have been exhibited internationally.
Perfectionism is not essential; rather, the moment itself is perfection. Each time, I shed my experiences and start anew in every situation. Each work exists on its own, without connection to the preceding or following one – it is an act of absolute freedom.
